It was easy enough. Through text, it was almost too easy. Jessup agreed on a date that evening, promising heâd have room by then for a burger. And that was that. It happened so quickly, under the streamlined influence of Dollyâs expertise, Maria hardly realized sheâd just set up a date when it was done.
âSee?â Dolly said once the details were agreed upon. âFun stuff.â
Internally, Maria had to admit sheâd never have done it without Dollyâs pressuring her. That wasnât to say she didnât want it otherwise. She did, on some deeper level just like Dolly assumed. But it was hard giving in to such things, when just the mere idea felt like wishful thinking.
âLet me help pick out your clothes. Oh my god.â
âWhat?â Maria asked, concerned.
âNothing. Iâm just excited.â
They spent nearly forty-five minutes altogether deciding what sheâd wear. During the whole process, Maria couldnât stop thinking to herself how grateful she was for Dollyâs help. And her energy. It was almost enough to replace her anxiety with some excitement of her own.
âTake off your hoodie,â Dolly said. âI want to see what this sweater looks like.â
âCanât you just⦠look at the sweater?â
âI need to see it on. Off with the hoodie, I say!â
Maria removed her hoodie, feeling especially exposed even wearing a tank-top underneath. It wasnât like the hoodie covered up the scars on her neck in the first place, but somehow wearing it was safer. The scars were all the more emphasized, she thought, when you could see the otherwise smooth skin beneath them. Dolly seemed not to notice at all. At first, anyway. As she stepped toward Maria to hand her the sweater, she paused. To Mariaâs despair, Dollyâs eyes traveled down her neck and she frowned.
âWhat is that?â Dolly asked.
âWhat is what?â
âThat thing youâre wearing.â Dolly stepped closer and reached for it. All at once Maria felt a wave of relief. âWhat is this?â
Dolly held Mariaâs grandmotherâs necklace in her hand. A leathery circle with strange designs. She turned it over, and her look of revulsion never changed.
âItâs a family heirloom, sort ofâ¦â
âYou wear this all the time? Iâve never seen it.â
âI usually wear it under my clothes. But yeah⦠most of the time.â
âYouâre wearing it tonight? Are you⦠sure?â
Maria took it from Dollyâs hand and tucked it down her tank-top.
âDonât worry about it. He wonât see it.â
âMust be important to you,â Dolly said, her mouth twisted exaggeratively.
âIt was my grandmotherâs. And then my momâs. Just think of it as a lucky charm.â
That was a lie. She wasnât sure why she said it. Maybe she thought Dolly would understand that better. People had their superstitions. The truth was that the necklace wasnât lucky at all, if you really wanted to consider thatâ¦
âOh. I see.â Dolly smirked devilishly. âYouâre hoping to get lucky, is what youâre sayingâ¦â
âI didnât say that.â
âDonât worry,â Dolly said, and winked. âI get it.â
Hoping to let the subject end there, Maria didnât try to argue Dollyâs point further.
